Am I the only one who HATES being on the galactic rim? - r/Stellaris (2024)

I don’t care how good the start is, if I’m on the galactic rim I WILL restart for a better location, I even sacrificed a Gaia world right next to my starting system because of of this.

I am the complete opposite. I loathe being anywhere else, having my back up against the edge always seems to make for fewer choke points later on, and playing on GA that can easily make or break my ability to survive.

My multiplayer group is very tired of me.

This. Being on the rim gives me a guaranteed secure border. Sometimes you roll snake-eyes and run into an immovable object, limiting your expansion further, but otherwise having a direction you don't have to watch constantly (or explore) is a bonus.

My perfect save was ruined once because swarm choose my home sector to arrive. And I was not prepared.

I love being on the galactic rim. Sometimes I reroll just to get there.

u/Chazman_897d ago

I love being on the rim because if makes it easier to defend myself.

u/chrisinokc7d ago

Agreed!

I usually love having a quiet spot on the edge of the galaxy, with as few border connections as possible. But I totally get why you'd want to be in the middle of the action as well.

Being on the rim sucks if you're aggressive and is good if you're passive. I prefer to start galactic center as an militarisric empire but since its random, it is painful in influence costs to start rim without auth or xenophobe as an aggressive empire.

u/ExocoryakMilitarist6d ago

Come the midgame, you can get pretty decent influence gain from some militarist civics / councilors, as well as Power Projection. It's actually far stronger than Authoritarian or Xenophobe.

And I always seem to get Baron Victor Jariden as a Renowned Paragon somewhat early - he comes with the appropriate Destiny Councilor trait increasing Influence from Power Projection.

u/tears_of_a_gradStar Empire6d ago

you are supposed to take militarist anyways if you're being aggressive though. That should go unsaid. Midgame is mostly doing the obvious based on your early game setup.

game's mostly doing the obvious by the time destiny traits come into the picture IMO. Starting position doesn't matter when you are in the midgame, but it is critical in the early game.

Upvoting to support a truly edgy opinion on this subreddit.

Surely it's anti edgy? ;)

Depends what I'm doing. I've mDe several variations of an earth empire and on those I restart if on the rim because its the wrong spot for earth. It sure feels like the game starts you out there 80% of the time if you don't want it!

6

u/TakedownCHAMP977d ago

It depends for me. The galactic rim can be nice because I usually get more space and have fewer potential areas to get attacked from, but then I’m at risk from the Scourge. The inner rim is usually more cramped and competitive, but you are less likely to get hosed by crises

u/Loss_Leaders_LLCEnvironmentalist7d ago

Being one of the absolute Inner or Outer system upsets me, yes.

But It's not the end of the world.

5

u/aelus_nova_amora7d ago

I hate it because it feels so limited and unconnected, I love being in the middle of a bunch of nations going to war and having shifting alliances and borders, etc

4

u/Unkindlake7d ago

I prefer to be on the edge. I can race to choke points to cut off a swath of the galaxy where I can necrophage/thrall world a bunch of pre-ftl civilizations and fester until I'm ready to start conquering/subjugating my neighbors as I creep into the galaxy

5

u/kairu998777d ago

Absolutely. I love being on the rim. The more sexy choke points the better.

I'm a turtle boy.

7

u/New-Number-78107d ago

If I'm playing as Earth, then being either right at the rim or right in the center wrecks immersion for me.

u/rkorgn7d ago

Yes. I'd like a proper sol start location in the galaxy!

3

u/PM_Me_Ur_Greyhound6d ago

Yeah forces a lot of restarts trying to get a semi-realistic earth start.

3

u/AsukaSimp027d ago

Depends. I find the rim more preferable for isolationist/peaceful empires because you can usually manage a smaller number of neighbors, whereas I find the closer I am to the center of the galaxy the more of a thunderdome it can become. I also find that usually grabbing land on the rim is easier, so I'll probably go to war later on compared to central locations because I don't need more planets or systems right away

3

u/CorgiBaron7d ago

I hate both rim and core equally. I want to expand into all directions.

3

u/JustARandomGuy_716d ago

What!? Why? If you are on the rim, you have one side less to worry about. Unless there is another empire that lock you there, it is one of the best possible positions.

2

u/SnappGamez7d ago

Being on the rim is great for defense because you have one less border to worry about defending.

2

u/SirGazWorld Shaper7d ago

I am truly indifferent about my starting location.

1

u/obscureposter7d ago

I play with full hyperlanes so being on a galactic rim is an advantage defence wise since you have at least one direction where enemies can’t attack you but I dislike how the borders look at the galactic rim soI always restart if I’m on the rim

1

u/MrPounceTV7d ago

I quite like the rim when I want to play defensive, or when I'm playing a threatening empire, or one more focused on observing/diplomatic manipulation than direct (war). There's just something that tickles the filthy roleplayer in me about a genocidal threat coming from the edge of the galaxy, or the mysterious watchers who seem to be pulling all the threads in the galactic senate.

1

u/RhinoTheHinoRogue Servitor7d ago

I'm with you! It may play better mechanically but I love being surrounded by and forced to interact with other empires.

1

u/Will_the_MechanistDemocratic Crusaders7d ago

you're not alone, i hate being on the galactic rim or directly bordering the galactic core, i'll accept a couple systems in from the core but if my start is on the outer or inner rim i WILL restart with extreme haste.

1

u/Zennithh7d ago

I like to start close to the rim, but not on it. Doesn't feel good if my start sector doesn't have room to branch out.

1

u/Death_Sheep19807d ago

Funny, I often restart if I wind up in the galactic core (note that I only play 4-arm spirals).

1

u/MetatypeA7d ago

It depends.

If you're on the rim, and you still have a variety of hyperlanes to build a good capital sector, being on the Rim can actually be more defensible.

If you're at the very edge, and there's only one lane leading into the galaxy, that sucks a ton.

1

u/Imaginary_Bee_10147d ago

Depends, i prefer inner rim up to inner half of the galaxy

1

u/Wortsalat347d ago

Being against the edge of the galaxy can make make you feel more secure for a while (one less border to worry about), but the first time I encountered the Prethoryn Scourge, back when they were introduced, they arrived right in my empire and steam-rolled me completely. That galaxy was then lost to the Scourge.

1

u/RakatonkDriven Assimilators6d ago

On a starburst it is the perfect start. On a spiral galaxy not so much.

1

u/suomikim6d ago

i care more about other aspects of the starting location... so a bonus Gaia? happy. good solar system resources? nice. if i want to play peaceful i might be annoyed to have FP sandwiching me (although if there is a good chokepoint, that can be advantageous).

but i wouldn't restart a game for the position alone

(now, in old days, people would restart on position when each precursor civilization was always in the same point in the map... but that is ancient times... what? 4? 5 years ago? 6? )

1

u/Lahm0123Arcology Project6d ago

I don’t mind spawn geography.

1

u/LocusHammer6d ago

More border connections the better

1

u/Specialist_Growth_496d ago

I just hate when i dont start in a one choke-point deadend. Give me 10 systems with 4 planets and one choke-point. Perfect play-through right there.

1

u/MikeDeSams6d ago

I do this but for core. My claustrophobia kicks in.

1

u/Admirable_Airport_942d ago

Yeah dawg, I think its just you. I honestly despise spawning anywhere other than the edge/corner of the galaxy. Granted, it's probably because 90% of my games I play Tall, isolationist empires...

1

u/Skaterwheel6d ago

Imagine not being strong enough to play from any given location.

If I were you, I'd focus more on becoming a stronger player instead of reloading cause you don't know how to deal with that start position.
