In-N-Out Burger is setting its sights on opening a location in Twin Falls, and it’s not a surprise to Planning and Zoning Director, Jonathan Spendlove.

Once it was announced last year that the chain, famous for its double-double and animal-style items, was building in Meridian, Spendlove said that based on its business model, it was inevitable it would march to the Magic Valley.

After all, he pointed out that the official In-N-Out T-shirt featured the scenic Perrine Bridge to commemorate the chain’s first Idaho location.

The city’s Planning and Zoning Commission has set a June 25 hearing to discuss a proposed special use permit for In-N-Out’s drive-thru and extended hours.

The chain has filed a permit to purchase the Outback Steakhouse property at 1965 Blue Lakes Blvd. N., demolish the present building and construct a restaurant of its own.

“Should we obtain approval, once we begin construction on a new location, it usually takes us eight to nine months to build the restaurant and open for business,” Mike Abbate, In-N-Out vice president of store development said in a written comment to the Times-News.

Abbate noted that the company is still early in the pre-development process, “so we hope for a positive outcome as we work with the city to pursue our permits and approvals.”

Outback Steakhouse is still open in Twin Falls, but a phone call to the Outback media relations department was not returned.

While it’s no secret that many people in southern Idaho have been craving an In-N-Out location in Twin Falls — stories about the chain building in Idaho are among the most popular posted on the Times-News website magicvalley.com — one of the big questions is whether the streets can handle the crowds of motorists who would be expected to converge at that location to get their burger fix.

A round-about on Fillmore, which has been known to get backed up at times, is next to the proposed location and is not owned by the city, but Woodbury Corporation.

The city might need to work with the company and/or In-N-Out to find a solution to prevent detrimental affects to local roads, Spendlove said.

Josh Palmer, city spokesperson, said he expects a large crowd at the 6 p.m. June 25 hearing at City Council Chambers. One reason is because of the excitement of having a new restaurant in town. The second is due to possible effects on traffic flow.

In-N-Out Burger opened its Meridian location in December and two other restaurants are planned in the Treasure Valley. The chain started started as a simple hamburger stand near Los Angeles in 1948. It has grown to about 400 restaurants.

The chain says it emphasizes fresh ingredients. Hamburger patties are made from 100% American beef and whole chucks are boned and ground by In-N-Out’s butchers. All patties are produced and delivered fresh throughout the week to the stores and are never frozen. French fries are made from fresh, whole potatoes and are hand-diced, its website says.

The chain is also known for its not-so-secret secret menu, including “animal style” burgers that include pickles, extra spread, grilled onions, and mustard fried onto each meat patty.
