On what’s on her bedside table

Usually you’d find water that I bring up before I go to bed, because then I drink more when I wake up. Maybe a notebook, as when I find it hard to get to sleep, I do word walls. I got into a bit of a bad habit of staying up late, so started to write down a nine letter word with mixed up letters. Then you choose a letter in that word and come up with as many words as possible with that letter in it – it’s a really good way of occupying your mind without technology.

On technology

I think there is a lot of shame around the hold that technology has over us. But I think that it’s okay to accept that we are addicted to our phones. We are in a moment in history where technology has purposefully been put upon us, but I think the moment that we just accept that we are addicted to our phones, we’ll be able to think about what small steps we can take to help with that. They might seem really silly and small, but sometimes you need a bridge. So rather than being on social media or working on your phone, you’re doing a brain training game or reading or something.

On wellness

Meditation is something that I go through phases with. When I’m meditating, I’m like, “This is great, why don’t I do this every day?” And then, of course, you get out of the habit – and get back into it again. The goal, for me, is to minimise the gaps, because when I am meditating, it’s great. I love taking five minutes in the morning when I’m not reaching for my phone, and just sitting there. We don’t really take those moments and a lot of people are quick to say they don’t have the time to do half an hour of meditation, but even if it’s just five minutes at a time to help form a small commitment that can be grown, that’s good.

I also love a plunge pool and infrared sauna – I’m lucky enough to be able to go and do that sometimes, which I think is so great as it helps with inflammation and sleep.

On her favourite way to work out

I enjoy going for a walk, running and climbing. I’ve been climbing for about three to four months now and I absolutely love it – it’s such a good way to clear your head, because you can only think about how to climb the boulders. I struggle with consistency and climbing doesn’t feel like I’m having to go to the gym and exercising –it’s more of a holistic thing that cleanses your mind. It’s time to spend with yourself. I often tag on a strength session at the end and occasionally run – sometimes a slow 10K or a faster 5K.

I think [a good workout routine] is getting into the habit of little and often, rather than trying to do everything at once. I try to get up and move, and do something every day. That might mean stretching for 10 minutes. Just doing the smallest thing you can do that day, and building on that.

On her off-duty make-up look

It’s pretty much the same every time. I’ll fill in my eyebrows and use some kind of eyeliner, whether that’s a flick or a cat eye, just to give the eyes shape. I’ll often use some lip liner in a deeper colour to my natural lip colour, and maybe some gloss on top too.

On the secret to a really good shower or bath

I can’t have hot showers or baths because of my sensitive skin. To most people that sounds awful as everyone loves a hot bath, and while I do miss it, unfortunately heat just irritates my skin. For me, a really good bath involves not having your phone anywhere near you, or even in the bathroom.

On star signs

I’m actually not into star signs, but I do know mine is Taurus – though I have no idea what that means and have never really subscribed to that way of thinking. I’m sure I’d be interested, and if I met someone that knew all about it then I’d be intrigued to listen, but I’ve never really plugged into it.

On her favourite fragrance

My favourite fragrance is Chloé Nomade – I wear it every single day. I love it. I’m a spray-and-walk type of gal. That’s my technique – give a good spray in front of me, from head to toe, and then move into the spray zone.

On what beauty icon she would be for a night

I guess I’d look to people who push or challenge some kind of normal beauty standards, or give a different perspective on beauty. I think that is really cool. I’m thinking of Prince and the way he presented himself as so unique – I would love to have a night playing dress up in his wardrobe.

On beauty rituals that help her relax and switch off

My husband gives me a foot rub, which he is really great at. I also like to do a head and shoulder massage – my hands may be small, but they’re very strong!
