SUMMARY: A Russian court has scheduled a trial for American journalist Evan Gershkovich, set to commence in less than two weeks. Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter, has been detained for over a year, with U.S. officials and his newspaper denouncing the charges as baseless. Accused of espionage for allegedly sending information on military equipment facilities to the CIA, Moscow has not presented any supporting evidence. U.S. officials and the Wall Street Journal dispute these allegations. Russian President Vladimir Putin hinted at a possible prisoner swap, potentially involving fellow American Paul Whelan, but this would likely only occur after a verdict.

SUMMARY: Tropical Storm Alberto, positioned in the southwestern Gulf, features an extensive wind field reaching Panama City, causing winds up to 40 mph even far from its center. This poorly-organized storm will move inland by early morning, subsequently weakening as its wind field shrinks. Coastal flood warnings are in effect with significant impacts expected on the NorthShore and western lake areas of St. Tam, Orleans Parish, Hanco*ck County, and St. Bernard with 1-2 feet of flooding. Texas and northern Mexico might see heavy rainfall (5+ inches and 10-20 inches, respectively), leading to possible landslides. Another tropical system could develop soon.
Chief Meteorologist Chris Franklin says as Albert moves inland, gusty winds along the LA coast will subside.
The NHC found the closed surface circulation to declare our disturbance Tropical Storm Alberto, however, expected impacts have not dramatically changed. The large wind field is creating some coastal flooding concerns along the LA coast due to the strong, persistance east wind. As Alberto moves inland early tomorrow, the wind field will begin to relax and flooding should be improving Thursday and Friday. Heavy rains will continue moving inland over south Texas with more than 5″ of rain accumulation likely, but parts of the mountains in northern Mexico, 10-20″ are possible. Landslides will be a major concern.

SUMMARY: Today marks the celebration of Juneteenth National Independence Day, commemorating the emancipation of the last group of enslaved African-Americans nearly 160 years ago. On June 19, 1865, 250,000 African-Americans were freed in Galveston, Texas, under President Abraham Lincoln's order. This day has been celebrated since then but gained federal recognition in 2021 after President Joe Biden signed it into law. Reverend Ambrose Doart of the NAACP highlighted the holiday's importance and its historical significance. Juneteenth is celebrated with festivals, parades, and church services across communities. NBC 10's Haley Hines reports live on this commemoration.
